GLASGOW, Ky. - Two seventh graders at Barren County Middle School have had their works selected to be displayed in a traveling art exhibition put on by Arts For All, a Kentucky based group devoted to helping children with differing levels of ability find expression through art.
Taylor Read and Hunter Davis both have difficulties with communication, and art classes have given them a great outlet to be themselves.
Art teacher Sarah Vetters says incorporating students of differing levels of need into arts classes pays dividends.
"Classes like art is are one time when, you know, students are integrated. So I have students who are in, you know, who are in art, who have all abilities. So allowing them to interact with peers that are the same age as them, allowing them to, you know, have those same experiences that everybody does," Vetters said.
Being able to help these students receive recognition for their work is very important to Vetters, who says it feels like some of that work has now paid off.
"I think it means a lot to them and I think it means a lot to their families as I myself have two children with special needs and seeing my children get recognized alongside other people for their achievements is amazing because sometimes we feel like our kids get forgotten, to be honest," Vetters said.
