Lusaka, Zambia24 (14-02-2024) - The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has demanded an investigation into the leakage of a private conversation involving Hon Cornelius Mweetwa by KBN Television Station.
In a statement to Zambia24, Deputy Media Director Cheelo Katambo criticized KBN Television for recording and disseminating the private discussion, labeling it a breach of media ethics.
Cheelo asserted that broadcasting a private conversation violates Hon Mweetwa's privacy rights and undermines his freedom of association.
"The party is urging both the Zambia Police Service and the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) to probe KBN Television for potential violations of cyber laws and media regulations," he said.
He stressed the importance of responsible reporting to prevent malicious intent and safeguard human rights while upholding media independence.
Additionally, Cheelo highlighted instances of media misinterpretation, citing a recent false report from a media outlet in opposition strongholds.
Furthermore, the UPND seeks clarification from the IBA regarding KBN Television's compliance with provisions safeguarding human dignity and respecting diverse opinions.
He also called for investigations into potential breaches of cyber laws by KBN Television, specifically related to cyberbullying and dissemination of false information.
The ruling party pledges to defend its officials targeted by malicious media campaigns aimed at tarnishing their reputations.
He urges relevant institutions to uncover the motivations behind KBN Television's recording and publication of the private conversation involving Hon Mweetwa.
