ISLAMABAD: Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervez has said that the National Assembly Library and Research Centre has a pivotal role in strengthening parliamentary research.

He also said that research centres play an important role in providing information and support to MNAs to ensure innovative research-based legislation. He expressed these views while addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the upgrade and renovation of the National Assembly Library and Research Centre.

General Secretary of the National Assembly Tahir Hussain, Special Secretary for Special Initiatives Syed Shamoon Hashmi, Special Secretary of Legislation Muhammad Mushtaq, and senior officers of the National Assembly were also present.

The speaker said these departments, after upgrading, would provide support to the members of the National Assembly in legislation and policy-making more efficiently.

He said that the centre creates a stronger linkage between the people and their representatives. He also expressed his resolve that a new era of digitisation and information technology would make the National Assembly an organisation to be emulated.

Special Secretary of the National Assembly for Special Initiatives Syed Shamoon Hashmi briefed the speaker on the upgrade and renovation of the National Assembly Library and Research Centre.

He also said that the upgrade of the National Assembly Library and Research Centre would be undertaken keeping in view the needs and trends until 2050.

He said that all the records of the National Assembly are also being digitised. He said that this record would be kept in the 'National Archive of Pakistan' and the 'Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology' apart from the library of the National Assembly.

He said that the tenders for the upgrade of the National Assembly Library and Research Centre have been issued, and the work on it will start very soon.
