No. 10 seed Exeter began its quest to defend its District 3 Class 5A boys basketball title with a commanding win over No.7 seed Lampeter-Strasburg in a first-round matchup on Monday night at Lampeter.

With the win, the Eagles (16-8) will play at No. 2 seed Mechanicsburg (17-5) in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Exeter was led by senior All-Berks selection Kevin Saenz, who scored a game-high 26 points and made three 3-pointers. He also went 3-for-5 from the foul line.

The Eagles led 35-26 after the first half and Saenz scored 14 points in the second half. Exeter outscored the Pioneers 19-11 in the third quarter.

Senior Reece Garvin had 12 rebounds and scored eight points, with all eight coming in the first quarter. Sophomore Aidan Dauble had eight rebounds and scored 14 points for the Eagles.

No. 11 seed Muhlenberg secured a win over No. 6 seed West York in the first round of the District 3 Class 5A boys basketball playoffs on Monday night at York.

With the win, Muhlenberg (15-9) will play at third-seeded York Suburban (18-5) in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Junior Jayden Kantner led the Muhls in scoring with 12 points and fellow junior Shermar Killen had 10.

Muhlenberg outscored the Bulldogs 15-5 in the first quarter before West York outscored the Muhls 18-8 in the second. Killen scored seven points as Muhlenberg outscored the Bulldogs 11-9 in the third quarter.

Seventh-seeded High Point defeated No. 10 seed Mount Calvary Christian in overtime in a District 3 Class 1A first-round boys basketball game on Monday night at Geigertown.

The Eagles (16-6) will play at second-seeded Lancaster Country Day (14-8) in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 7 p.m.
