Daltonganj: Jaram village under the Latehar block limits is an emerging hotspot of fluorosis with 57 confirmed cases surfacing so far.

"The village has 65 houses and 337 head counts in which 57 confirmed cases of fluorosis have been detected," said Latehar civil surgeon Dr Awadesh Singh, adding that the cases of dental fluorosis are far higher in numbers than skeletal flourosis.

"Out of the 57 cases, dental fluorosis has been found in 55 cases. Two cases are of both dental and skeletal fluorosis," he added.

A medical team led by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Kamlesh Chandra, under the orders of Latehar DC Garima Singh, had held a special health camp at Jaram on February 19.

In this health camp, a total of 118 people were examined by the medical team comprising two more doctors Chandramani Bakhla and Anjali Priya.

District consultant for national programme for prevention and control of fluorosis Khushbu Tirkey along with two dental hygienists also examined the 118 visitors.

Dr Awadesh Singh said, "The western side of Jaram village has reported cases of dental and skeletal fluorosis. Drinking water engineers should find out its reason. The eastern side of Jaram is free of the high concentration of fluoride. Fluoride has to be invariably in water. It's high concentration which is 1.5 particles per million /litres causes dental and skeletal fluorosis."
