Coimbatore: A refrigerant gas cylinder exploded in a car at a parking lot adjacent to a private hospital at Saibaba Colony here on Tuesday afternoon, triggering tension in the locality for a while. The car was damaged in the incident.

The Saibaba Colony police said the car was owned by K Saravanan, 32, of Oomachikulam near Samayanallur in Madurai district."A mechanic, he was running a shop named Gokila Refrigeration to repair and service air conditioners and refrigerators at Samayanallur."

According to a police officer, Saravanan came down to Coimbatore city on Tuesday and parked his car at the parking lot adjacent to the private hospital at Saibaba Colony. "He kept a refrigerant gas cylinder and two empty cylinders in the car and went to the hospital for air conditioner service work. The refrigerant gas cylinder suddenly exploded because of the high temperature around 1pm. The car's two doors and roof were completely damaged in the incident."

On hearing the explosion sound, people in the locality, including patients and attenders, rushed to the parking lot and they thought it was a car bomb. They also alerted the Saibaba Colony police, who rushed to the spot. "Meanwhile, Saravanan returned to the parking lot and told us that it was a refrigerant gas cylinder that went off due to high temperature," the officer said.
