Coimbatore: An unidentified woman aged about 60 years was killed in a suspected wild elephant attack at Arumugagoundanur here in the early hours of Monday. The incident took place when she was sleeping on the veranda of the Karupparayan temple. The temple is at least 500m from the village and 1.5km from the forest boundary.

A herd of 18 elephants had strayed out of the reserve forest in Ettimadai beat of Madukkarai forest range early on Monday.Three elephants separated from the herd and entered Arumugagoundanur.

The unidentified woman used to sleep on the temple's veranda. She was found dead around 12.30am on Monday. It is suspected that she was attacked by a wild elephant.

However, forest department officials said they found no injuries on the elderly woman's body. The Perur police were informed of the incident. They visited the spot and sent the body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for a postmortem.

Forest officials said if the postmortem confirms death due to elephant attack, the deceased woman's family will be given a compensation of 10 lakh. Meanwhile, efforts are being made by the police department to trace the identity of the deceased.
