BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Polls have closed in the California 20th Congressional District race where a seat to replace former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy is up for grabs.

Polls closed across the 20th Congressional District in California at 8 p.m. The district includes portions of Kern, Tulare, Kings and Fresno counties.

The race includes Assemblymember Vince Fong who entered the race after filing for reelection to his state Assembly District 32 seat. A Sacramento judge overruled the California Secretary of State Shirley Weber's determination that Fong was not eligible to enter the race because candidates could not enter more than one election.

Fong now appears on the ballot in the 20th District race and the 32nd District Assembly race. Fong has said he is focused on winning the Congressional seat.

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux's candidacy got a boost when Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood and state Sen. Shannon Grove announced their endorsement of Boudreaux over Fong. Grove and Youngblood said negative ads against Boudreaux swayed their decisions.

A few days later, former President Donald Trump announced his endorsement of Fong in the race.

Democrats Marisa Wood and Andy Morales are also in the race looking to see if they can muster enough support to be one of the top finishers in the vote count.

This seat is open after former Speaker of the House and longtime Bakersfield Rep. Kevin McCarthy announced his resignation from Congress at the end of 2023. McCarthy has endorsed Vince Fong in the race.
