Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone of two new metro corridors in Delhi today. The Phase 4 metro extension has been given a green signal by the Union Cabinet Ministry yesterday. As per the official information, the ceremony is scheduled to take place at the JLN Stadium on March 14 (today).

This latest development in the capital's metro aims the metro network aims at connecting Delhi's Inderlok with Indraprastha and Lajpat Nagar with Saket G Block.

The 20 km long extension primarily objectifies in minimising traffic congestion with an alternative that is more safe, economical and eco friendly.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, gave the green light to this project on Wednesday. An investment of Rs 8,399 crore has been earmarked for these corridors, with contributions coming from the Central government (Rs 4,309 crore), the Delhi government, and various international funding bodies.

Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor:

Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor an extension of the Green Line will feature a total of eight elevated stations. The expansion will be approximately 11.35 km long underground followed by a 1.03 km of elevated track. This corridor will intersect with six other lines enhancing the metro network versatility.

Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor:

Meanwhile, the expansion between Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor will be an 8 km long stretch featuring 8 elevated stations linking four lines, being an entirely elevated route.

"These two lines will bring down the travel time as passengers won't have to take long defours (by trains) to reach the destinations. These will connect busy commercial areas. Once the projects are approved, DMRC will start the bidding process. There is a greater need to connect more part of Delhi with Metro to deal with increasing congestion," said an official DMRC source, as reported by the Times of India.

Currently, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) operates an extensive network of 391 km with 286 stations, positioning it as one of the most rapidly expanding metro systems globally.
