The Windhoek Hockey Tournament (WHT) is back for its second year, promising an even more exhilarating and competitive event than before. Following the success of the inaugural tournament in 2023, the 2024 edition is set to be a showcase of top-tier hockey talent from schools across Namibia and beyond.
The Windhoek Hockey Tournament is a prestigious three-day event that brings together first and second teams from schools across Namibia to compete on the Davin Astro Turf at Windhoek High School from today through to Saturday.
With a focus on fostering growth and development in Southern African hockey, the tournament features both first and second divisions, providing a platform for players of all skill levels to showcase their abilities.
In a significant expansion from the previous year, more coastal schools will be competing this year, while the ultimate goal is to establish the Windhoek Hockey Tournament as an annual international event, attracting teams from schools worldwide.
"The Windhoek Hockey Tournament has been established with the primary objective of contributing to the growth and development of hockey in Southern Africa," the tournament organisers, Beyond Sport stated in a press release.
"By providing an elite educational environment and a platform for challenging hockey, team skill, and personal development, the tournament aims to create highly intelligent athletes within a competitive structure," it added, saying: "Beyond Sports are committed to providing high-level technical support from other coaching staff and creating a three-day excellent educational and professional sport environment."
The Windhoek Hockey Tournament features two age groups: First teams for boys and girls, and second teams for boys and girls. This inclusive structure ensures that players across all levels of skill and experience have the opportunity to participate and contribute to the success of their teams.
"We are excited to bring back the Windhoek Hockey Tournament for its second edition. Building on the success of last year, we have expanded our reach and offerings to make this event a true celebration of field hockey across all of Namibia," said Nevil Gora, the founder of the Windhoek Hockey Tournament.
