Dibrugarh: Amidst the heat of the Lok Sabha election campaign, Union minister and BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday hit the campaign trail in the newly constituted Chabua-Lahowal assembly constituency of Dibrugarh district to woo voters. The Chabua-Lahowal assembly constituency, which has 1,73,877 voters, is one of the 10 assembly segments of Dibrugarh parliamentary constituency and holds significant weight in the electoral landscape.

Accompanied by party leaders and workers from both the BJP and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Sonowal addressed multiple election rallies during the day. The AGP MLA from Chabua assembly seat, Punakon Baruah, also joined Sonowal presenting a united front.

Sonowal also interacted with the tea garden voters and sought their support in the election. Striking a chord with the voters, Sonowal even joined a jhumur dance, a traditional folk dance of the tea tribe.

Sonowal (61) is contesting from the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat this time where he will face off with Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP)'s Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Manoj Dhanowar. Notably, Sonowal was the first non-Congress candidate to win from the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat in 2004, defeating 5-time Congress MP Paban Singh Ghatowar. Sonowal secured the victory on an AGP ticket. Having started his political career under the AGP, Sonowal's eventual shift to the BJP marked a significant turn in his political career as he went on to become the CM of the state before becoming a minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet.

Highlighting the achievements of the BJP-led central and state governments during his campaign on Tuesday, Sonowal cited the implementation of various pro-people schemes, which have positively impacted the lives of millions across the country. "The BJP has always prioritised the welfare of the common people. Our commitment towards ensuring a better and prosperous life for every citizen remains unwavering. Together, we will continue to work towards building a strong and self-reliant Assam," Sonowal in his speech said.

Sonowal outlined his vision for the development of the Dibrugarh constituency, emphasising key areas such as healthcare, education and infrastructural development.
