BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH) -- A woman walked into the Bristol police station on October 5, 2023, brandishing a firearm, marking a chilling anniversary just a year after the loss of two officers in the line of duty.

It all started when the woman began banging on the security window with the weapon before discharging it inside the lobby. She pointed the gun towards her head, asking for help.

Officer Hall approached the woman, attempting to de-escalate the situation and assure her of assistance. However, the situation quickly escalated when the woman turned the gun toward Officer Hall, prompting him to seek cover.

Fortunately, there were no injuries and officers were able to use a taser, officers were able to safely apprehend the woman, ensuring she received the help she needed.

"They were able to formulate a plan they were able to execute that plan, and best case scenario nobody got hurt. And that's what they're all about," said Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould,

In a ceremony honoring their valor, officers and dispatchers were recognized with silver stars, distinguished service medals, and exceptional service awards.

The awards ceremony showcased numerous acts of heroism, from saving choking infants to apprehending armed felons.

"I had Southington officers I had Bristol's officers and state police, I may be the one receiving the award tonight, but all of the teammates, every single guy that was on that day assisted with that call," said Officer Brian Dicristoforo.

With each award was a story of heroism, saving the life of a domestic violence victim to arresting four armed felony car thieves. For Chief Gould who announced his impending retirement, this was his last ceremony.

"It is with a heavy heart that it will be my last one so, it's exciting but I'm going to be very sad as well it has been a great career and to be working with such great people I have been blessed," said Gould.

As Chief Gould bids farewell to his distinguished career on April 6, the legacy of bravery and commitment to public safety lives on in the officers of the Bristol Police Department.
