BIRMINGHAM -- Police in Birmingham are investigating a homicide after a man was found dead with injuries he had suffered in an assault, according to BPD Sgt. Laquitta Wade.

Police said the incident occurred on Saturday, March 23. The victim has been identified as Roderick Levann Davis, 63, of Birmingham.

"At approximately 8:19 a.m., north precinct officers were dispatched to a person down call in the 400 block of 1st Street West, Elyton Neighborhood," Wade said. "When officers arrived on the scene, they observed an adult male lying face down in a grassy area unresponsive, with facial abrasions."

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased. Officers notified BPD homicide detectives who began conducting an unclassified death investigation.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office arrived on the scene and took custody of the victim.

"The preliminary investigation suggests a community member observed the victim down and called 911 Emergency Services," Wade said. "Initially, it was believed that the victim may have died of natural causes and the abrasions were caused due to the fall to the ground."

At approximately 10:20 a.m., the Jefferson County Coroner's Office ruled this investigation a homicide, Wade said. The victim was physically assaulted.
