The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) over the weekend said its business centers are set to take a long weekend later this week in observance of the Easter Triduum, as it assured its customers of "continuous, reliable, and stable" services throughout the Holy Week.

In an advisory, Manny Pangilinan-led Meralco said its business centers will be closed from March 28 to 30, with operations set to resume next Monday, April 1, but its personnel will be ready to attend to customer concerns during the period.

"We are one with the nation in observing a solemn and safe Holy Week. As a 24-hour service company, we assure our customers that our crews are on standby to attend to concerns and unexpected power interruptions," Meralco vice president and head of corporation communications Joe Zaldarriaga said.

Malacañang earlier declared March 28 (Maundy Thursday) and March 29 (Good Friday) as regular holidays, and March 30 (Black Saturday) as a special non-working day.

Meralco also advised its customers to unplug appliances when going away for several days, along with refraining from "octopus connections" or plugging in extension cords into a single power outlet.

It also called on the public to avoid placing and running electrical cords under rugs or carpets as this could damage the insulation of wires, which should be kept organized and stored properly.

The company earlier said it has enough reserves to cater to the expected demand amid the ongoing El Niño season, with no expectations of a yellow or red alert in the coming months.

Meralco constructs, operates, and maintains electric distribution systems in the cities and municipalities of Bulacan, Cavite, Metro Manila, and Rizal, as well as certain areas in the provinces of Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, and Quezon.

The firm counts as subsidiaries and associates Vantage Energy Solutions and Management Inc. and MeridianX Inc., acting as retail electricity suppliers in Luzon and the Visayas. -- RF, GMA Integrated News
