Coimbatore: Three days after their son was arrested for pelting BJP cadres on electioneering with stones under the influence of alcohol, the parents of Nowsath, 19, on Monday lodged a counter-complaint with the city police against the cadres of the saffron party for allegedly attacking their son.

In her complaint to deputy commissioner of police Dr R Stalin, N P Zeenath, 42, said, "BJP cadres assaulted my son Nowsath on Friday night."

Nowsath, a resident of Kannappa Nagar, is studying in a private college in the city.

"Police did not take up our complaint against BJP cadres. The Kavundampalayam police should take action against the BJP cadres - Prabhu, Shankar and a few others," Zeenath said.

However, police maintained that Nowsath created a nuisance and pelted BJP cadres with stones. Four BJP cadres, including two women, suffered injuries in the attack.

One of the injured cadre, Prabhu, was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment. Police arrested Nowsath on Saturday and remanded him in judicial custody. He was lodged at the Coimbatore central prison.

Moreover, Kavundampalayam police inspector Rajesh said the youth was under depression after his lover was engaged with someone. He was under the influence of alcohol and abused police in filthy language. "We have video-graphed the whole incident. But his parents are trying to divert the issue," police said.

"We received a complaint from Nowsath's family on March 29 and registered a case against a section of BJP cadres for assaulting Nowsath. Now, the parents are demanding the arrest of BJP cadres who attacked Nowsath. Further investigation is on," a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, BJP state president K Annamalai said the stone pelting incident was verified and confirmed by police and officials overseeing the Lok Sabha elections. "DMK has instigated the parents of the arrested person to lodge a complaint," Annamalai said.
