Coimbatore: A nine-year-old girl drowned in an underground water tank at her neighbour's house at Pachapalayam near Perur on Sunday night.

The girl, identified as Gokula Priya, had gone to her neighbour's house on Bharathiyar Street for a birthday celebration around 8.30pm on Sunday.

When she did not return home till late at night, her parents Veeran and Sengavalli approached the neighbour's house.They were told that Priya had left their house after the celebrations.

When the parents frantically searched, they found Priya drowned inside the underground water tank at the neighbour's house.

Immediately, the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead. Perur Police registered a case under section 174 CrPC.

Meanwhile, the parents of the girl lodged a complaint with Perur police on Monday, suspecting foul play in their daughter's death.

However, police denied the allegation and said that there was no foul play in Priya's death.
