Rohtak: Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU) in Haryana's Rohtak, accredited with an A+ Grade by NAAC, recently advertised 112 vacancies for assistant professors on its official website on March 11.

The application window closed on April 3, drawing an overwhelming response with over 10,000 applications received for these teaching positions. Kuldeep Kumar, an applicant for the assistant professor role, highlighted the university's prolonged struggle with a shortage of teaching staff. He said that hundreds of job seekers who were qualified had been waiting for years and there was no recruitment in the varsity for a long time.

A senior professor, involved in the recruitment process, expressed astonishment at the sheer volume of applications, exceeding expectations. The influx of applicants, not limited to the state but from across the country, poses a considerable challenge for the university's selection committee. Vikas Siwach, president of the MDU Teachers Association, attributed the surge in applications to escalating unemployment rates and government lapses in recruiting faculty.

Siwach underscored that out of 550 approved positions, only 60 faculty members have been recruited in the past 16 years, leaving nearly half of the posts vacant. MDU Rohtak has been grappling with a faculty shortage, impacting its NIRF ranking last year.
