CAPE TOWN - The police and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have welcomed the sentencing of two gang members who were handed seven life sentences and 45 years direct imprisonment each in the Western Cape High Court.
Gcinithemba Beja and Fundile Maseti, who are members of the so-called Gupta gang, faced numerous charges for the murder of seven people in a shooting in Khayelitsha four years ago.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said investigating officer Zinele Ngqola intensified the investigation to bring those responsible for the murders to book.
"A statement was obtained from an independent eyewitness, who placed the suspects on the scene. His persistence led to the arrest of two males, aged 29 and 45, because of the meticulous investigation, a well-prepared case could be presented to the court."
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila also lauded the efforts of advocate Pulane Thaiteng, who used a single State witness, known only as Mr X.
"Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions advocate Nicolette Bell applauded the investigating officer and advocate Thaiteng for her guidance during the investigation. She also applauded Mr X for his brave decision to testify despite threats to his life."
