JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to lodge a complaint with the Public Protector against the African National Congress (ANC) for manipulating public funds for electioneering, following a leaked audio recording of a meeting discussing its campaign plan.

The main opposition accuses the ANC of abusing state resources and the public purse to supplement its 2024 elections campaign.

In the recording, the ANC's "battle plan" is discussed, with the ANC's president, Cyril Ramaphosa, taking issue with media reporting negatively on the governing party, while its head of elections, Mdumiseni Ntuli, while delivering a report on the lay of the land, says ministers in ANC-led departments and provinces must submit plans of all the projects to be launched between now and the May 29 elections.

Ntuli also said ministers deployed by the party must take out radio adverts promoting work done under 30 years of ANC rule.

DA leader, John Steenhuisen: "This new revelation is proof that the ANC is the ultimate emotional manipulator, gaslighting the South African electorate with false promises and smoke and mirrors at the taxpayers' expense all to remain in power."
