Police Constable Suspended, Six Arrested for IPL Betting | Chennai News - Times of India

Chennai: A police constable attached to the Elephant Gate police station has been placed under suspension after an investigation revealed his association with a gang arrested for online betting during an IPL match two days ago. The suspended constable, Kamesh, was part of a special team under the Elephant Gate inspector (law and order). Officers said he was suspended on Tuesday for staying in touch with betting racketeers.

Six people were arrested by police for online gambling during the recent IPL match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH).On information about betting activity, police mounted a vigil at a mobile phone accessories shop on Perumal Mudali Street during the match.

They then arrested Y Sandeep, 33, T Kathes, 32, P Rajesh Kumar, 33, T Thiraj, 41, and seized 14,000 in cash and four cell phones from them.

Based on their inputs, police arrested S Ankit Jain, 32, and P Jitender, 44, of Sowcarpet on Monday and seized 6,250 in cash from them. All the arrested were released on their own bail by the inspector of police.

The involvement of the constable, Kamesh, with the gang was unearthed during the investigation, police said. While reviewing the mobile call details of the arrested suspects to track the main bookie behind the betting scam, the officers were surprised to find head constable Kamesh's mobile phone number among their contacts.
