Silchar: Incessant rainfall and hailstorms over the past few weeks have hit the production of tea, resulting in 50% crop loss in the Barak Valley areas of Assam.

An official of the Tea Association of India's (Barak Valley branch) said, "We are fearing a 50% crop loss in May compared to the crops harvested in the same period last year."

Sorodindu Bhattacharjee, secretary of TAI's Barak Valley branch said tea production had declined in the area by 1.4 million kg in 2023 due to unfavourable weather conditions.

The storm accompanied by hail in the last couple of days had a devastating effect in the tea garden areas of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.

"Thousands of hectares of tea plantation have been damaged by hail and storm, caused leaf laceration and leaf fall in LP, MS and UP areas. Electric lines and poles were uprooted, roofs of dwelling houses, factory and store buildings have been damaged in many places," he added.
