Guwahati: The Pollution Control Board, Assam, (PCBA) has directed the NF Railway authorities to suspend transport and unloading of fly ash operations at the material handling yard of Lanka railway station in Nagaon district for causing air pollution in the surrounding areas.

The board also slapped a fine of Rs 7,80,000 on NFR for violation of pollution norms.

The board has directed NFR to transport fly ash to the yard in wagons after containing it in sealed bags and to set up mechanised unloading arrangements. The pollution board slapped the fine for the violation period from April 7 to May 2. The board added that a fine of Rs 30,000 per day will be levied with effect from May 3 until the NFR complies with the prescribed directions.

The board issued the directives on Friday after it found the Railway's reply to a showcause notice issued last month "unsatisfactory".

The board registered a suo moto complaint against the NFR after monitoring the material handling yard in the railway station on April 7.

NF Railway's CPRO Sabyasachi De told TOI that the PCBA's closure notice has not yet been received by the department concerned.
