GLASGOW -- Ss. Peter and Paul's baseball team entered its game May 7 at Glasgow without a win, but the Sabres didn't travel more than 70 miles from Easton, Md., for nothing. When a popup settled into the glove of Sabres shortstop Nathan Merchant for the final out, the team celebrated in front of their first-base dugout for some high-fives and hugs.

The Sabres scored seven times in the first inning on their way to a 12-1 win in six innings, getting that elusive victory in their final game of the season.

Ss. Peter and Paul took advantage of a lack of command from Glasgow's pitchers in the first, scoring their first run on a delayed steal of home by Merchant, then the remainder on walks and a hit batter. That was enough for Sabres starting pitcher James Brice, who allowed a run in four innings, and Mikie McHale, who threw the final two.

After the first-inning outburst, the Sabres steadily tacked on runs. Riley McNurlan singled to open the second, stole second and scored on a Dragons error. Brice, who reached on the error, eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Glasgow scored its lone run in the third. Diego Mercado De la Rosa walked to lead off the frame and reached third base on two wild pitches. He scored on a groundout by Jeremy Duran. The Dragons got runners to second and third with two outs, but Brice got out of the inning with a fly out.

The Dragons loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but the Sabres escaped any damage.

Jackson Stepp walked and scored an unearned run for the Sabres in the fifth, and they added two more in the sixth on bases-loaded walks to Merchant and Nikolas Nicolopoulos. That gave them the margin needed as long as they got through the sixth without allowing more than one run.

McHale walked the first batter, but he was erased at second on a fielder's choice. Two walks loaded the bases with Dragons, but the Sabres weren't rattled. McHale struck out a batter, and Merchant was there to end the game on Duran's popup.

The Sabres -- who featured 10 freshmen and sophomores on their 15-person roster -- wrapped up the season 1-13, but they ended the year with a game to remember. Glasgow (1-11) is on the road Thursday at A.I. DuPont at 3:30 p.m.
