Kano varsity union alerts on imminent crisis with govt

Nigerian Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) branch, has dissociated from the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the university, stressing that NAMDA is not part of the strike.

However, ASUU in Yusuf Maitama University, Kano (YUMSUK), raised the alarm over an imminent crisis with the Kano State Government.

NAMDA made this known, yesterday, in a statement entitled 'We are not on strike' in Abuja, yesterday.

In the statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Prof Kolawole Olorunshola, and Secretary, Dr Jonah Peter, the union noted its resolve not to be part of the ongoing strike by ASUU members in the university.

It urged the public to note that members of NAMDA were teaching the students on campus and that normal academic activities would continue in the College of Health Sciences, UNIABUJA.

YUMSUK ASUU accused the government of neglecting its demands.

A statement jointly signed by the branch chairman, Mansur Said, and secretary, Yusuf Gwarzo, on Wednesday, listed three pivotal issues bothering its members, including enhancing conditions of service, boosting and hastening the university's growth through sustainable funding, and strengthening and protecting university autonomy and academic freedom.

The union said it was constrained to bring the issues to the public after several efforts to make the state government attend to their demands failed.

It stated, "Condition of Service: The branch demands the immediate payment of the outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), totalling N178,705,735.91. The general public may wish to note that recently the union reached an agreement with the Kano government."
