Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) has said the rate of candidates who are set to sit Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations has increased by 13.2 percent.
In a statement released Thursday, Maneb Executive Director Dorothy Nampota further indicates that the board will administer MSCE examinations from July 2 to 26 this year.
A total of 184,978 candidates are expected to sit MSCE examinations this year, up from 160,586 who sat examinations last year.
Nampota further indicates that 163,950 candidates are expected to sit Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations.
"Maneb will administer JCE examinations from June 4 to 13 2024," she says.
Nampota further indicates that Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations would be administered from May 22 to 24 2024.
This year's PSLCE examinations will be administered to 262,216 candidates.
Meanwhile, quality education advocate Benedicto Kondowe has said the increased rate of MSCE candidates means many individuals now want to upgrade on their education.
"This upward trajectory suggests several potential implications. Firstly, it may indicate an increasing emphasis on education and qualification attainment within the population.
"Secondly, it could reflect improvements in access to education or a broader recognition of the importance of the MSCE certification for various educational and career opportunities," he said.
In a related development, Maneb recently held meetings with stakeholders in preparation for the administration of 2024 examinations.
These, according to Nampota, included district education managers, State security agencies (Malawi Defence Force and the Malawi Police Service), Teachers Union of Malawi, Malawi Secondary School Head Teachers Association and Independent Schools Association of Malawi.
