JOHANNESBURG - The European Council of Muslims and the United States Council of Muslim Organizations have endorsed the African National Congress (ANC) ahead of May's elections as the governing party intensifies calls for a ceasefire in the Middle East.

The two councils were among international organisations hosted by the ANC at its headquarters in Johannesburg on Monday.

Both organisations have given the ANC-led government a proverbial tap on the shoulder for spearheading the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The South African government was among the first countries to take a firm stance against what it describes as Israel's unruly attacks on Gaza.

This includes shutting down the Middle Eastern country's embassy in Pretoria and withdrawing diplomats from its mission in Tel Aviv earlier in 2024.

The secretary general of the United States Council of Muslim Organizations, Ousama Jamal, said the ANC-led government's stance against Israel should count for something among South African voters.

"We are encouraging everybody that we make sure that the ruling party stays in power and makes the next steps to take Israel into its responsibility."

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa said the party would continue to call for harsh sanctions against human rights violations.
