Chennai: A man, who married a woman after claiming to be a village administrative officer (VAO) and later harassed her for dowry, was booked by the Thousand Lights police on Tuesday.

Police said Ajithkumar, 27, befriended a woman from Kodambakkam and told her that he was the VAO of Madurantakam. The two fell in love and got married after getting consent from both their families.

A year ago, her parents gifted her 22 sovereigns of gold jewellery as dowry and promised to provide three more sovereigns later. After living with him for a couple of months, the woman found that he was not a VAO but was working as an office assistant to the VAO.

When she took up the matter with her parents, Ajithkumar physically abused her and demanded three more sovereigns of gold jewellery as promised. When her parents refused to provide the same, he assaulted her.

His wife lodged a complaint with the Thousand Lights All Women Police Station (AWPS) following which a case of dowry harassment and cheating was filed, apart from cases under the TN Prevention of Women Harassment Act. Ajithkumar is on the run.
