Guwahati: Cyclone Remal has become less marked over eastern Assam and its neighbourhood, losing its vigour and intensity.

However, the associated cyclonic circulation persists in the northeastern region, resulting in heavy to very heavy rainfall, primarily in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours, IMD officials said.

In a special weather bulletin issued on Wednesday, the IMD cautioned of enhanced rainfall activity over Assam till June 2. The IMD warned of light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall highly likely over Assam from May 29 to June 2.

The bulletin stated, "The depression (remnant of Cyclonic Storm Remal) over east Bangladesh has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area and will subsequently weaken into a low-pressure area (remnant of Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal) over northeast Assam and neighbourhood." Although it has become less marked, the associated cyclonic circulation persists over the same region and extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.

Moreover, according to the Met office observation on Wednesday, conditions continue to become conducive for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of the northeastern states during the next 24 hours.

Available data indicates that light to moderate rain occurred at most places over all seven northeastern states, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, including extremely heavy falls over Meghalaya, isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Mizoram, and isolated heavy falls over Manipur and Tripura during the last 24 hours.

In the northeast, during the last 24 hours until 8.30 am on Wednesday, Pynursla and Sohra (Cherrapunji), both in Meghalaya, were the two locations that recorded extremely heavy rainfall, measuring 31 and 28 cm, respectively. Mawsynram (20 cm), Bombdila (19 cm), and Cachar (18 cm) were among the locations that experienced very heavy rainfall during the period.

The IMD warned that thunderstorms and lightning with gusty wind speeds reaching up to 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday. Thunderstorms and lightning are also very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

The Met office predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday, while heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
