BHOPAL: Two siblings, aged 12 and 15, died from heatstroke on Tuesday when the temperature in Gwalior soared to 46 degrees. Denied admission by a hospital, their mother had to drive an hour with her children dying in her arms.

Monika and Abhishek had insisted on accompanying their mother, Sunita, to Kailaras town in Morena district, 85km from Gwalior, to buy medicine for their grandmother, who is paralysed.

After collecting the medicine, they were on their way back in an autorickshaw when Sunita noticed Monika's health deteriorating. She stopped at the nearest medical centre, where the child was given some medicine and Sunita was told to take her to a hospital immediately. However, Monika's condition worsened rapidly and she fainted. Soon, Abhishek also began feeling uneasy, which quickly deteriorated into a state of panic and then unconsciousness.

Sunita, now frantic, called her husband and urged him to meet them at a hospital in Morena, halfway to Gwalior.

However, according to Sunita, they were refused admission at a Morena hospital. The mother was now desperate, but there was no option but to take the kids back to Gwalior, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. The cause of death was suspected heatstroke.

The administration is investigating why the Morena hospital denied them admission. The Gwalior collector has issued an advisory to all educational institutions and coaching centres to adjust timings in view of the heatwave.
