Ahmedabad: More than 500 organs have been donated to Civil Hospital in the past three and a half years. Most recently, the liver, kidneys and heart of a person were donated to Civil, a statement from the hospital said.

In the 155th donation made to Civil Hospital, the kidneys, liver and heart of 32-year-old Upendrasinh Shivshankar were donated. Upendrasinh worked as a labourer in Chhatral and had suffered head injuries in a fall on June 1.He was first taken to a private hospital and later shifted to Civil, where he was declared brain-dead by doctors on June 1.

The statement said doctors counselled his family on organ donation and they agreed to it. Hospital superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said the kidneys and liver will be transplanted into patients visiting Kidney Hospital at Medicity, while the donated heart will be transplanted to a patient at the UN Mehta hospital. He added that the total number of organs donated at Civil has reached 501.
