Kern County law enforcement urges vigilance for children in triple-digit heat

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- With summertime fast approaching, children will soon be running outdoors, but with the triple-digit weather Kern County has been experiencing the past few days, law enforcement says paying extra attention to young children during hotter temperatures will save parents and guardians from situations of unimaginable grief.

According to the National Safety Council, each year, 37 children (under 15) die from heat stroke after being left in a hot vehicle. So far in 2024, two child deaths from hot cars have been reported.

"Always keep a lookout," said Janeth Vega, community relations unit for Bakersfield Police Department, "Make sure you're taking your child out of there because the impact can be deadly."

Vega also said children are at heat stroke risk when they overdress or perform intense physical activity without any hydration. To avoid this, make sure your child is wearing loose, light-colored clothing and drinks water regularly.
