CAPE TOWN - The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is set to host a Reading Indaba to tackle reading challenges among primary school pupils.

The university said South Africa is grappling with severe literacy challenges, with a recent report indicating that a grade four learner isn't able to read with meaning.

UWC's Thembisa Kosi: "The world is talking about learners who are unable to read with meaning in grade 4, and those discussions sometimes point to the teacher training, that is to the institutions of higher learning."

Kosi added that UWC was committed to the culture of reading and language development.

"By hosting this event... [UWC] demonstrates that it's not only committed to stay informed about current educational challenges, but also takes part in working towards solving the literacy problems."
