Ahmedabad: Gross negligence by the civic body almost cost a 41-year-old scooterist his life on Saturday evening after a lamppost fell on him.

Nayan Rajput, a resident of Behrampura, was returning home from work when the incident occurred near the Parimal Garden traffic signal. According to Rajput, he had stopped at the traffic signal. As the light turned green, he proceeded towards Parimal Underpass when suddenly a street light pole came crashing down on him.

The impact caused Rajput injuries to his shoulders, head and legs.Other commuters rushed to his aid. "They called an ambulance which took me to a nearby private hospital. I needed treatment for two days before I could be discharged," said Rajput.

He said this was "gross negligence" by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). "The pole collapsing is an indication of AMC's shoddy work and lack of maintenance. I can only thank my stars that I survived," said Rajput.

He added that the incident had a great financial cost for him. "With a wife, two children and my mother dependent on me, this incident caused a great financial burden for me," Rajput said. "Those responsible in the AMC need to be held accountable so that such things don't happen again."

Rajput said he will file a complaint against the AMC once he recovers.
