Ludhiana: A day after environmental activists issued an ultimatum on Buddha Dariya rejuvenation project, officials of Ludhiana MC reviewed the initiative on Wednesday and concluded that it was almost complete, claiming that only the construction of a pumping station was pending.

The meet at MC's Zone D office in Sarabha Nagar was chaired by MC additional commissioner Paramdeep Singh.Officials of PPCB, PSPCL, drainage, soil conservation, and PEDA were also present.

An official said only the construction of an intermediate pumping station (IPS) near Gurdwara Gaughat was left, and that was pending due to a court case. Commissioning of two ETPs had been completed on Hambran Road and Tajpur Road, added the official.

During the meeting, officials of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) were directed to keep a regular check on dumping of untreated waste by owners of dyeing units. Dumping of untreated waste in MC sewer lines affected the working of sewage treatment plants (STP) and added to the pollution of Buddha Dariya.

PEDA officials were directed to expedite the projects of establishing biogas plants on Hambran Road and Tajpur Road. The plants are being established to deal with cow dung generated in the two dairy complexes. MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi too appealed to the dyeing industry to ensure that untreated waste is not dumped in sewer lines. He said plantation drives were also being taken up alongside Buddha Dariya, wherever possible. tnn
