MANILA, Philippines -- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has yet to pick the next head of the Department of Education (DepEd) following the resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio from her post, Malacañang said Friday.
Presidential Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil said there was no officer-in-charge (OIC) yet to take over Duterte-Carpio's post, noting that her resignation would only take effect on July 19, 2024.
On Wednesday, Garafil announced that Duterte-Carpio submitted her "irrevocable resignation" letter to Marcos.
"At 2:21 p.m. of 19 June 2024, Vice President Sara Duterte went to Malacañang and tendered her resignation as member of the Cabinet, secretary of the Department of Education and vice-chairperson of the NTF-Elcac, effective 19 July 2024," she said.
Garafil said Duterte-Carpio "declined to give a reason" for her decision to step down from the DepEd and the NTF-Elcac.
