Pagasa: Shear line to bring cloudy skies, rains in Southern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines -- Many parts of Southern Luzon may experience overcast skies with scattered rains on Thursday due to the effects of a shear line, state meteorologists said.

A shear line is the convergence of the cold northeast monsoon (locally known as amihan) and the warm easterlies which may bring isolated rains over some areas in Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) explained.

In a morning report, weather specialist Benison Estareja said scattered rain showers will prevail over the Bicol Region and Quezon province due to the shear line.

"Mag-ingat sa posibleng pag-baha at pagguho ng lupa lalo na't minsan lumalakas po ang pag-uulan," he cautioned.

(Be wary of possible floods and landslides especially since rains may get heavy at times.)

For the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, cloudy skies with light rains may occur due to the impact of the northeast monsoon, Pagasa said in an advisory.

Visayas and Mindanao, meanwhile, may experience partly cloudy skies with light rains due to easterlies and localized thunderstorms.

While overcast skies are expected to prevail over those areas, Estareja said residents in Visayas and Mindanao may still experience hot and humid weather especially during midday.

Temperatures in Iloilo, Cebu, and Tacloban may reach up to 32 degrees Celsius while temperatures in Zamboanga and Davao may hit 33 degrees Celsius.

"Until the end of this week, we are not expecting any weather disturbance to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility," Estareja noted.

As for the country's seaboards, a gale warning is raised over Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, and Ilocos Norte where waves may be as high as 4.5 meters.
