EAST GRAND FORKS - A man is dead after being shot by police serving an arrest warrant south of East Grand Forks.

It happened at a home about a mile south of the city where Rhinehart Drive ends along the dikes.

One neighbor told WDAY-TV police setup in his yard around noon saying they were looking for a wanted fugitive.

That home belongs to the fugitive's mother.

Members of the East Grand Forks Police Department, Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Pine to Prarie Task Force were service the warrant.

Police say the man was spotted outside the home around 12:30 p.m.

When officers tried to approach him investigators say he ran back into his mother's house where he was shot and killed.

WDAY-TV has learned he is a 42-year-old man from the area.

A person close to the investigation tells WDAY-TV the man's mother was home, and she was forced to the ground by officers who then shot and killed her son.

According to those sources the man was shot in the chest and stomach.

It's unclear if the fugitve had any weapons.

The man was reportedly wanted on 12 theft charges and police have been looking for him since August when he failed to show up in Polk County Court.

He has a long criminal history in Minnesota and North Dakota.

The Minnesota BCA is leading the investigation and say they will release a preliminary report in the coming days.
